Chicago

December 9, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Admirals Performing Arts Company with Farragut High School is presenting a teen edition of the Tony-Award-winning musical “Chicago” the film adaption of which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2002. Dr. Tony Wooley is overseeing it, but most of the actual production is run by students, with the set being fully built by students in their stagecraft class. Aimee Klenske, secretary for the FHS CTE building, praised the “extraordinari-ly talented” students. She said the stage looked like something on a Broadway production. Hayden Toon, a member of the Admirals Performing Arts Company, described how challenging the dance numbers were, more difficult, and stylistically very different, from previous performances. However, the tight-knit performance arts students were up for the challenge. Hayden said, “The way that everybody has been able to learn new stuff and really put themselves into the show has been excellent, and I think it’scoming along nicer than we could have ever imagined.”

Dr. Wooley-head of the theater program-said, “We are very excited to be working on this show. After the great success of Mamma Mia! last year, the creative team decided to try something very different from the upbeat, pop jukebox musical genre. Chicago: Teen Edition gives the students a totally new experience for the stage. The themes in this show are artistically complicated and socially challenging, and the fact that Concord Theatricals offers a Teen Edition allows for the students to dig into some grit without being too edgy or offensive. I believe that it is imperative to offer the studentsa wide variety of productions over their four years at Farragut so they can truly experience all that the stage has to offer. We hope that the community is as excited to come and watch this classic musical as we are to produceit for them. Theatre can be a gift for both the audience and the cast. We hope everyone can come out and enjoy the show!”

Set in the jazz of the roaring twenties, “CHICAGO: Teen Edition” tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two women searching for stardom while also being tried for murder. Plotting their comeback from the Cook County jail, they ultimately join forces in search of the American Dream: fame; fortune; and acquittal. This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal stagingby Bob Fosse.
